If any one will take the trouble to look over the different agricultural and horticultural magazines for the last twenty-five years, and note the immense quantity of pears offered for sale, (Standard and Dwarf) they would be led to suppose that by this time good pears had become cheap and common. But what are the facts? Except for a short season, when the Seckle, Bartlett and Duchesse are in season, good pears are not to be obtained in quantity, even in districts where the climate is supposed to be congenial and the culture best understood. Again, if we glance over the minutes of the meetings of the different horticultural societies during the same time, it will be seen that no single subject has occupied so much time, and been more thoroughly discussed, than the culture of the pear.
